How to Survive Allergy Season: 4 Natural Solutions

Spring has sprung and for many of you so have your seasonal allergy symptoms. Seasonal allergies, sometimes called hay fever, cause irritating symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, and a scratchy throat. You don’t have to suffer, here’s how you can survive allergy season!

Allergies are a defense mechanism of your immune system and a reaction to your body coming in contact with a substance such as pollen or dust. In some people these substances register as a harmful invader and an antibody is created. Next time the body comes in contact with the supposed invader the antibody will cause a release of histamine causing inflammation of the nose, eye, and throat tissues.

While many people reach for the medicine cabinet to find Claritin or other antihistamines, these drugs often have side effects that can outweigh the benefits. One of the most common side effects of antihistamines is drowsiness. This symptom is a result of the drug having an sedative effect on the brain which can be potentially dangerous when driving. This sleepy feeling also interrupts the normal sleep cycle and other brain function.

Instead of adding to your symptoms with nasty side effects, survive allergy season with these natural allergy solutions first!

Essential Oils

Peppermint essential oil can help unclog your sinuses and relieve a scratchy throat. Peppermint also contains menthol which can acts as a relaxant to your airways stoping the constriction which leads to a cough.

  • Try diffusing 4-5 drops of peppermint oil in you favorite diffuser and inhaling the vapor.
  • You can also mix a few drops of peppermint oil with you favorite carrier oil like coconut oil for a topical application on the chest.

Neti Pot

Using a neti pot (a small, teapot-like pot) is a simple technique to safely clean your sinuses of irritants like pollen. It involves pouring water into one nostril and allowing it to flow out the other. It can be very helpful in relieving pressure in the sinus and face. Limit nasal rinses to 1 to 2 times a day.

What you need to do a nasal rinse:

  • A neti pot
  • Distilled water (do not use tap water)
  • Saline solution: 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of sea salt to warm water- let salt dissolve)

Allerplex (Standard Process)

One of my top recommended supplements for relief from seasonal allergies.

  • Allerplex, with vitamin A and C, supports the body’s immune system and its ability to handle seasonal changes
  • Main ingredient, Fenugreek, supports the movement of mucus in the body.

Chiropractic Adjustments

By improving communication between the immune, nervous and respiratory systems, chiropractic care can help patients get through allergy season without relying on medications. Adjusting the neck and cranial bones facilitates the drainage of mucus from the sinuses helping you breath better after just one treatment!
